With the recent end of daylight savings time and the shorter days, walks in the evening take place in the dark. Thus, additional hound (and human) equipment is added to the list of required walking gear.

Here, I model a fine LED collar light. Beau and I each have one for our collar. Additional gear includes an orange reflective collar for each of us and some reflective arm bands for the humans.
If you prefer a movie reference instead of musical for this post, one evening, we happened to meet a couple out for a walk, and when we were in speaking distance, they asked us about the lights and mentioned they had wondered at first if aliens had landed. No, just a bloodhound!

Aliens baying at the moon? How cool.
We believe bloodhounds and aliens are related. There is no other possible explanation!
The sun sets at 3:55 pm up here now, so even a late afternoon walk is in total darkness. Even with reflectors and headlamps it is too dangerous to be out in the dark due to all the moose in our neighborhood. They will charge and trample anything that they perceive as a threat, and we can't see where they are in the dark. And it's too cold for me to be out very long anyway, since it's below zero. So our excercise is all indoors now, until about March. You are a very lucky hound to still be going for walks. I'm very jealous!
When my mom was writing this she was thinking that a little LED probably wouldn't be very effective against a moose. She also figures it probably wouldn't do Wimsey much good in Central Park after dark either.
We'll probably be able to get out for walks in the evenings for awhile. We'll see what gets to be the problem first - snow or cold.

Mom is ordering one of those headlights (like miners wear) for our morning walks since the street lights always go off when we walk underneath them. Perhaps it's a sign... Not sure about the alien thing, though... Wow, Gus, the moose sound scary. This morning, a neighbor's dog (practically the size of a moose) ran at me growling. Big brother Bernie stepped in to protect me--what a great guy.
Marmalade, have your mom look up dog musher's headlamps. They are really good.
Edie is threatening to wrap a battery operated string of Christmas lights around me and take me for a walk anyway. I could be my own parade.
Oh good idea! Around here, they're sold in hunting goods stores.
